Meet the Owners
Innkeepers Stan and Nancy Purdy are also the owners of the Bailey House. Nancy grew up in the home and has witnessed much of its restoration. The Purdy’s are passionate about maintaining the legacy of Ulysses S. Grant and his ties to their home. They are very active in the preservation of Georgetown’s historic past, and guests are welcomed to enjoy a private tour of the U.S. Grant boyhood home, located only a few doors down the street.

Where History Meets Hospitality
The Bailey House was built in 1832 for the prominent Georgetown physician Dr. George Bailey and his family of eight children. It is one of the oldest homes in Georgetown and has not been structurally altered, inside or out, except for the addition of a wing in 1876. That addition replaced a log structure that stood adjacent to the main house.
The Bailey House was purchased by current owner Nancy Purdy's great-grandfather and has been in the family since 1874. It became a bed and breakfast in 1994.
Admitted to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, this location is a Historic and Romantic destination that visitors will treasure. Many of the artwork, furniture, and furnishings have been in the family for more than 100 years.
Of particular interest to Civil War enthusiasts, is the Bailey House's collection of Civil War reading, featuring a large literary collection focusing on General Ulysses S. Grant. The Purdy’s have many stories of Ulysses' visits to the Bailey House and his relationship with the Baileys. After enjoying some time in the library, guests can adjourn upstairs to appreciate the train display in the attic.
In addition to the Bailey House, Georgetown also offers guests a chance to explore this quaint and historic town, with opportunities for shopping, dining, U.S. Grant's Boyhood Home and School House, nearby Underground Railroad sites, and a driving tour of covered bridges and quilt barns.
“Circa 1830. The stately columns of this three-story Greek Revival house once greeted Ulysses S. Grant, a frequent visitor during his boyhood when he was sent to buy milk from the Bailey’s. A story is told that Grant accidentally overheard that the Bailey boy was leaving West Point. Grant immediately ran through the woods to the home of Congressman Thomas Hamer and petitioned an appointment in Bailey’s place which he received, thus launching his military career. The inn has double parlors, pegged oak floors and Federal-style fireplace mantels. Antique washstands, chests and beds are found in the large guest rooms.”
